Wednesday 8/28 What is your relationship with writing like? Describe the good, bad, and the ugly

My relationship with writing has generally been pretty positive throughout my whole life. When I was in elementary school, I realized that I enjoyed writing (and English in general) more than most other subjects. I like how writing is graded more on effort and being detailed, and is always up for interpretation. Reading a lot of books also made me enjoy creative writing, where I could create a story from my own head, and it wouldn’t have to follow a rubric or write about a boring topic. A good moment that I can remember comes from last year (English 10). We had a timed writing on a novel, and I didn’t know the prompt until I got to class that day, but I understood the main themes of the novel and felt confident that I could craft a detailed essay. When I was writing during the 55 minute block, I focused on getting my ideas down on the paper, instead of the little grammar mistakes I made. A bad writing moment I can recall was poetry writing in 9th grade. We had to free-write a poem that didn’t rhyme or follow any poetry pattern. It wasn’t very fun for me to write stanzas that didn’t rhyme or have specific syllabic patterns. I didn’t like how awkward the poem sounded when it was read, and I still don’t. An ugly writing moment I remember was occurred when I wrote one of my very first essays at Iolani (9th grade). I had just learned what the Keables code was, and had to memorize numerous codes and incorporate them into the editing process. I absolutely dreaded using the codes, and became very frustrated at all the mistakes I had to fix. I wanted no part of the Keables code and it made me despise writing for a short time.
